Alive Inside: Film and Community Discussion lead by Mary Lynn Pannen

1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia according to the Alzheimer’s Association. It is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States and is creating an epidemic that is impacting families across the country. It is the only cause of death that currently cannot be slowed, cured, or even prevented. This disease demands our creativity in the way we care for those individuals with the disease and their families. Different types of dementia impact the body and the mind unhinging ourselves from our own lives. Music has offered families a backdoor into the mind of their loved ones and a tethering connection to the people they once were and the humans they continue to be.

Writer and director, Michael Rossato-Bennett produced a documentary film called ALIVE INSIDE, that depicts the role of personalized playlists in the care of individuals in nursing homes suffering from a variety of ailments and dementias. Michael won the 2014 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for U.S. Documentary and has made an incredible impact in the minds of Americans across the country. His film has sparked a national conversation about how we can engage and better care for those with dementia.

President and CEO of SoundOptions, Mary Lynn Pannen RN, BSN, CCM has presented on the topic of music as a tool for dementia caregivers in a presentation called, Music Matters, which uses snippets of the film as poignant examples. She has presented at the Health Care Providers of Pierce County Alzheimer’s Conference for Caregivers as well as the National Geriatric Care Manager Association Conference. On September 6, Mary Lynn Pannen of Sound Options will be leading a post-film discussion of ALIVE INSIDE along with Bob Riler, Community Outreach & Education Specialist for Pierce County Community Connections.
