December Caregiver of the Month | Susie Gitau

Sound Options believes that exceptional care begins with exceptional employees. Each month, we highlight and share the story of one of our Certified or Registered Nursing Assistants who carries out the mission and values of Sound Options with professionalism, intelligence, and heart. This month, we shine the spotlight on Susie Gitau.

Originally from the small country town of Jonesboro, Louisiana, Susie Gitau developed a love for helping people early on. Even in grade school she enjoyed working to care for children, as well as disabled and elderly people. Providing care for her grandparents and other family members would prepare her for the brave work of caring for her mother who grew ill later in life.

Many people recommended that she put her mother in a nursing home, but Susie felt that the right thing to do was to provide compassionate care herself. Susie found a way to balance the impossible task of working three jobs and caring for her parent. Susie’s personal investment in her mother, who is now much better and living independently in her own apartment, is a huge inspiration for Susie’s continued career in home care.

Susie never takes for granted that she can do what she loves. Being a good caregiver to her means giving others the same opportunity to fill their life with the things they love to do. The desire to meet others’ needs, provide compassionate care and invest in the lives of others is a strong theme in her work and life. When she is not working, you will find Susie being creative. Writing, drawing, painting, sewing, singing, and reading bring a lot of joy and peace to her life. Caring for others can be demanding and being creative helps her stay calm and de-stress at the end of a long day.

We appreciate the big heart that Susie brings to her work every day. She cares for clients with the same attention and compassion that she would extend to her own family. “Never forget your friends and family”, she said, “never forget where you come from”. Thank you for all you do and the way you carry out the mission and values of Sound Options!
