Zoe's story... Do you know what it's like to have someone say "You will never be able to have a baby of your own?" Those were the exact words that my husband and I heard last year from my doctor.
Hearing those words felt like a sentencing, the reality felt like a nightmare.
I grew up in a large Asian family, and my husband was raised in a large Caucasian family with 8
siblings. Both my husband and I wanted to recreate the way we were raised by having a large
family of our own, but with that one sentence, our dreams were thrown to the wind. I left the
doctor's office feeling hopeless.
A few months later, my husband and I started to discuss the idea of adopting a child. My
husband had two brothers that were adopted, and he felt that it would be something we could
manage. We began to talk to various adoption agencies, and I felt pulled towards adopting an
African-American infant. Many people told us that bi-racial adoptions were difficult, and why
didn't we want to stay within our "race". That just infuriated me! My husband and I had a bi-racial
marriage, so why couldn't we adopt an African-American child?
I called my EAP to find out more about the adoption process. Thank goodness they connected
me with Sound Options, Inc.! When I started to tell the consultant about our issues regarding
adoption, she took the time to truly listen. She emailed me some fantastic resources on bi-racial
adoptions, the adoption process, and some great information on newborn basics. She also
connected me with a fantastic website that had information on everything regarding all types of
adoptions.
My husband and I are now the proud parents of Sarah! She is the joy of our lives, and thanks to
Sound Options, we were able to plow through the difficulties of a bi-racial adoption and come out
the other end with a healthy baby girl.
