10 Ways for Seniors to Celebrate National Poetry Month 

Not only is it Artful Aging Month at Sound Options, April is also National Poetry Month, a month-long celebration of poetry started by the Academy of American Poets. Poetry has the ability to transport us into another time and place. With diversified themes, they can help us laugh, grieve, reminisce, and are a great excuse to build community. Here are 10 ways to celebrate with your aging loved one:

Celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day: April 18th Carry a poem with you throughout the day.


 Read a book of Poetry out loud  with a caregier


Share a favorite poem with your loved one and ask to hear one of their favorites


Take a poem out to lunch. Feast on a book of poetry over a lovely lunch or picnic. 


Gather friends for a poetry reading circle. People can read their favorites, funny poems, or poems they’ve written. 


Go to the public library and check out a book of poems by a new author


Go to a poetry a writing workshop or various events offered throughout the month. Try your hand at writing your own poem if you are unable to attend events outside the home/ facility. 


Add a poem to a letter or email as an encouragement to a friend.


Start a reading group or suggest your book club read a modern book of poetry in April.
